They are the primary structural design standards used in the UK and are accompanied by UK National Annexes that modify certain parameters for UK practice.
Structural robustness is the ability of a structure to withstand disproportionate collapse following accidental actions — such as gas explosions, vehicle impact or localised construction failure. Building Regulations require structures to be designed for robustness, with more stringent requirements for higher consequence class buildings.
IStructE requires all Chartered Members (MIStructE) and Fellows (FIStructE) to complete a minimum of 30 hours of CPD per year, of which at least 16 hours should be structured activities with defined learning objectives and outcomes. Members must submit an annual CPD return by 28 February each year.
